MNG 100 - Intro to Vessel Operations

Course Description

This course is a general introduction to vessel operations. Topics covered include; the duties and responsibilities of vessel personnel, an introduction to the engine propulsion systems, the use of tools and auxiliary machinery, personal safety procedures, marine pollution prevention, and governmental regulations. This course provides a foundation for the deck and engineering cadet to build upon in his/her GLMA program of study. STCW

Required Prerequisites

All prerequisites for all GLMA courses are satisfied by following the approved Course Sequence Guide and any deviation from this guide needs to be approved by the cadet's adviser.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Describe the importance of engine room systems as they relate to merchant vessel operations.
  • Describe the roles of different engine department personnel.
  • Identify common engine room safety procedures including pollution control responsibilities.
Application:
  • Demonstrate the proper use of the hand tools associated with merchant vessel engine room.
  • Properly sound a tank.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic piping systems and valves, pumps, and propulsions systems.

  • Discern the importance of how individual pieces of equipment create systems that are essential to shipboard operation.

  • Demonstrate skills that are critical to working safely in an engine room.
