MNS 100 - Naval Science

Course Description

This course is required of all Maritime Academy cadets and is an introduction to Naval Science specifically oriented toward Merchant Marine officers. It is intended to familiarize students with the role of the Merchant Marine in national defense and policy and with the various concepts of cooperation between the Navy and the Merchant Marine Industry. Group 2 course.

  • Know basic Navy terminology and professional nomenclature.
  • Comprehend the relationship of seapower to national interests and maritime strategy in both peace and war.
  • Know the impact and significance of geography and Sea Lines of Communication on maritime strategy and naval operations.
  • Know the missions and functions of the U.S. Navy as described in maritime strategy.
  • Comprehend the importance of maritime partnerships and coalition operations.
  • Comprehend the importance of regional and cultural expertise/awareness to naval forces’ ability to successfully plan, operate forward, and engage effectively.
  • Comprehend the importance of a forward naval presence to maritime strategy through forward stationed and rotationally deployed forces.

  • Demonstrate the different forms of professional correspondence.
  • Apply the fundamentals of Operational Risk Management and Time Critical Risk Management.

  • Uncover patterns and cause/affect analysis of changes to national policy as it related to the U.S. Merchant Marine career.
