MDK 149 - Damage Control & Safety

Course Description

This course is designed to give the cadet a comprehensive knowledge of shipboard safety with particular emphasis on firefighting and damage control. Subject areas include: personal safety, pollution, U.S. Coast Guard rules and regulations, temporary damage repair, shoring principles and practical shoring problems. STCW. Group 2 course.

Required Prerequisites

All prerequisites for all GLMA courses are satisfied by following the approved curriculum guide and any deviation from this guide needs to be approved by the department head.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Students will understand chemistry and physics of fire.
  • Students will identify fire detection equipment, fire extinguishing agents, and portable and fixed fire extinguishing systems.
  • The student will describe fire prevention methods, safety precautions, and fire fighting tactics.
Application:
  • Students will locate and identify portable and fixed fire fighting systems aboard the training vessel State of Michigan.
  • Students will explain procedures for inspection and maintenance of fire fighting equipment and complete fire plan review for accuracy and regulatory compliance.
Integration:
  • Students will complete diagram of onboard Fire Main system on training vessel State of Michigan.
  • Students will locate fire fighting activation stations and operate Class A fire doors aboard training vessel State of Michigan.
  • Students will review Fire Plan and complete Fire Survey of designated spaces aboard training vessel State of Michigan.
Human Dimension:
  • The students will work in teams to complete 3 hands-on projects aboard the training vessel State of Michigan.
  • The students will utilize their knowledge of shipboard fire fighting to evaluate peer Case Study presentations.
Caring - Civic Learning:
  • The student will recognize the role shipboard fire prevention, maintenance, periodic inspections and training has towards the reduction in marine casualties due to fire, collision, or grounding which may result in an economic loss, loss of life, or environmental damage.
Learning How to Learn:
  • The students will research and analyze a documented marine casualty/mishap due to a fire and present the class with a case overview, analysis, lessons-learned, and preventative recommendations.
  • The student will apply study strategies to prepare for examinations.
