Course Description
This course will provide knowledge and practical experience required for Deck Cadets to complete the Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR) and requisite sea days necessary to obtain their Mate of Towing (Great Lakes & Inland) endorsement to their Merchant Mariner Credential. Group 2 course.

Course Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:
- - Identify tow vessel operations, safety and navigation equipment, and towing techniques.
- - Describe the skills required to serve as a Mate/Pilot on a tow vessel.
Application:
- - Train for a minimum of four hours per day underway while being supervised by a licensed - Master of Tow Vessels.
- - Execute required complex ship handling maneuvers during multiple towing evolutions.
- Complete and submit the USCG Towing Officer Assessment Record (Great Lakes Inland).
Integration:
- - Coordinate and execute all shipboard operations including pre-underway voyage planning, safety/risk assessments, mitigation measures, communication planning, and towing plans.
- - Connect knowledge of best practices between case studies and hands-on experience gained during towing operations aboard an Academy towing vessel.
Human Dimension:
- - Recognize the value of operating/integrating into a small crew and the advantages of cross-training/qualification with other departments.
- - View yourself as a pilot and deck officer.

- - Receive an endorsement as Mate/Pilot of Towing in accordance with USCG regulations and 46 CFR 11.465.
