Course Description

The fourth semester of a four-semester/two year sequence of coursework designed for students who are pursuing music as an academic major. The course content is a continuation of MUS 201 with the addition of the study of 20th Century compositional and beginning counterpoint. Group 1 course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

• Identify terminology associated with post-tonal theories and twelve-tone serialism.
• Identify harmonic, melodic, formal elements of repertoire from the romantic period.

Application:

• Analyze harmonic, melodic, formal content of repertoire from the romantic period.
• Analyze and write short examples of music utilizing modern compositional techniques including scalar, harmonic, and rhythmic elements.

• Analyze and write examples using principles of jazz theory.
