Course Description

This course provides information on complex problems facing families coping with complications during the childbearing/childrearing process, including an identification of at-risk families. These concepts will be applied to review of complications occurring during childhood and the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods. Group 2 course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Incorporate best practices based on research into the nursing plan of care for the maternal-child and family health populations.
Application:
  • Use clinical reasoning to ensure healthy practices persist when dealing with high-risk complications that can present during the preconception, prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
  • Formulate nursing interventions for at-risk indicators.
  • Create a plan of care for the at-risk client and family during the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
  • Apply the principles of health promotion/disease prevention, stress adaptation, growth and development, and cultural considerations for caring for families during the childbearing/child rearing periods.
Integration:
  • Coordinate care with other disciplines for children with chronic, handicapping, and/or life-threatening illnesses.
  • Coordinate care with other disciplines for families experiencing an at-risk prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
  • Evaluate at-risk indicators within multiple family structures.
  • Incorporates safe care practices that minimize the potential for harm to patients, self, and health care team members.
Human Dimension:
  • Plan nursing care with other disciplines for children with chronic, handicapping, and/or life-threatening illnesses.
Caring - Civic Learning:
  • Apply grief theory into the nursing management of pregnancy and newborn loss.
Learning How to Learn:
  • Correlate community, state, and national resources available for the family with complex needs into the plan of care.
  • Analyze data from a comprehensive assessment (physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual) to distinguish characteristics that may be problematic for individuals or families in the future.
