Course Description

In this course students will learn and practice in the laboratory environment the skills required to perform in the surgical setting. Emphasis will be placed on introductory skills, instrumentation, equipment and procedures relevant to general, gynecological, and genitourinary procedures. Students will be evaluated on their sterile and aseptic technique as well as case management skills. Group 2 course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Explain the various skills associated with the role of the surgical technologist in the scrubbed role.
  • Explain the principles of aseptic and sterile technique utilized in the field of surgical technology.
Application:
  • Exhibit the application of proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrate a proper hand wash prior to entering the OR.
  • Demonstrate Damp Dusting.
  • Demonstrate the procedure to set supplies around the room.
  • Demonstrate opening of the back table pack, basin packs, gown pack, instrument tray, peel pouches, and envelope wrapped items utilizing the principles of aseptic and sterile technique.
  • Demonstrate a surgical scrub utilizing the timed and brush stroke count methods.
  • Demonstrate the donning of the surgical gown and gloves employing the closed glove method.
  • Demonstrate the setup of the back table and mayo stand to include: draping of the mayo stand and placement of instruments and supplies by AST standard.
  • Exhibit the proper procedure for counting surgical instrumentation, sharps and sponges.
  • Demonstrate gowning and gloving of another person entering into the sterile field.
  • Demonstrate draping of the patient and setup of the sterile field at the surgical site in accordance with AST and Joint Commission standards.
  • Demonstrate the final time out before incision.
  • Demonstrate the passing of various types of surgical instrumentation, supplies, and suture in a mock surgery scenario.
  • Exhibit the correct procedure for closing counts.
  • Exhibit the proper procedure for applying surgical dressing.
  • Exhibit the procedure for removing drapes, cleaning the surgical field, breaking down the back table and mayo stand, and removal of the gown and gloves.
  • Demonstrate the proper procedure for changing a contaminated surgical glove or gown before and during a procedure.
  • Demonstrate the learned surgical skills in accordance with an inguinal hernia, wide local excision, breast biopsy, exploratory laparotomy procedures, DC, and a basic urology case.
  • Exhibit the ability to read a preference card, instrument count sheet, and a patient chart.
  • Demonstrate the methods of wrapping instrumentation and surgical supplies by square and envelope folds as well as peel pouching methods utilizing the proper use of chemical indicators.
  • Demonstrate the assembly of a surgical instrument tray employing the proper use of chemical indicators and locks.
  • Exhibit the procedure for pulling, drawing up meds and dispensing them to the surgical field.

  • Compare and contrast the difference between aseptic technique and sterile technique with their applications in the perioperative environment.

  • Will begin to see themselves as a professional with a growing sense of responsibility to infection control.
  • Will begin to gain a sense of a surgical conscience as they begin to make decisions concerning the health and well being of their patients.
