Course Description

This is the first of a four-semester/two year sequence of coursework designed for students who are pursuing music as an academic major or minor. The content of this course is the building of skills in reading music, and developing aural competency in interval relationships, scales, and triads, through a variety of musical practices. Group 2 course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Identify intervals through P8.
  • Identify major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads.
  • Identify chord progressions using I, ii, IV, and V.
  • Identify major and 3 forms of minor scales.
Application:
  • Sing m2-P8, major scale, 3 forms of minor scales, major and minor triads, and melodies using solfege.
  • Clap and count, and sing and conduct simple and compound meter.
Integration:
  • Transcribe rhythm dictation in simple meter and compound meter.
  • Transcribe diatonic melodic dictation.
  • Transcribe diatonic harmonic dictation.
Human Dimension:
