Course Description

The students learn the foundation for professional nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on the principles and skills needed to apply the clinical judgment required for safe patient-centered care. Communication is emphasized as an essential aspect of the professional role. Group 2 course.

Admission to the nursing program; BIO 228 w/grade of 2.5 or higher, may be taken concurrently.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Identify therapeutic communication styles that facilitate the process of completing a comprehensive verbal and physical patient assessment, for an adult.
  • Explain the professional and legal guidelines for the verbal communication and written documentation of patient medical information.
Application:
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to correctly identify variances related to the findings of an adult patient head to toe physical assessment.
  • Discuss the role of the nurse in promoting optimal health and wellness for adults.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply concepts and principles of medical and surgical asepsis to patient care situations.
Integration:
  • Define appropriate nursing interventions to implement for a specific adult acute care patient situation.
Human Dimension:
  • Correlate the relationship between nursing care and a patient's personal beliefs including culture, ethnic heritage and spirituality.

  • Explain the importance of using a non-judgmental, respectful and compassionate approach with every patient care interaction.

  • Identify the importance of utilizing evidence-based practice and best practices when creating a plan of care for adults in extended care and acute care settings.
