Course Description

Clinical component of Dental Radiography lecture. Students will be introduced to a variety of radiography techniques and will learn how to expose, process and mount radiographs of diagnostic quality. Requirements include multiple sets on dental manikins and four FMX sets on dental patients utilizing digital and traditional techniques. Group 2 course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:
  • Identify exposure factors: kVp, mA, and exposure times according to the target-film distance, film speed, and density of the patient's hard tissues.
  • Describe automatic processor procedures following manufactures' directions and OSHA safety regulations for handling hazardous chemicals.
Application:
  • Analyze medical/dental health histories.
  • Demonstrate correct patient positioning for all radiographic exposures.
  • Differentiate between the parallel technique and the bi-section technique.
  • Demonstrate CDC infection control guidelines while exposing and processing dental x-rays.
  • Demonstrate processing films according to manufacturer's directions using an automatic processor.
  • Demonstrate mounting and labeling the completed x-ray surveys with 100% accuracy.
Integration:
  • Integrate information learned in lecture to minimize exposure to operator and patient with 100% accuracy.
  • Relate when it is relative to expose intraoral vs. extraoral radiographs.

  • Interact with others on how to manage a medical emergency in the dental lab.
