Course Description

Study of the Great Lakes and principal ports; this includes currents, depths, aids to navigation, prevailing winds and their effects, recommended courses, shoals, reefs, and high traffic areas. Historic analysis will explain current practices.

Required Prerequisites

All prerequisites for all GLMA courses are satisfied by following the approved Course Sequence Guide and any deviation from this guide needs to be approved by the cadet's adviser.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

• Determine courses and distances.
• Locate Great Lakes Aids to Navigation.

Application:

• Identify the local knowledge from the US Coast Pilot.
• Properly label the name and light characteristics for Aids to Navigation.
• Demonstrate knowledge of locations and names of major shoals, islands, cities and towns in the Great Lakes.
• Describe the navigation regulations for each body of water.

Integration:

• Demonstrate competences by recalling data including charts from memory on examinations.

Human Dimension:

• See themselves as pilots within the maritime deck officer community.
• Develop as Great Lakes Pilots in addition to preparing to serve as licensed merchant marine officers.

Caring - Civic Learning:

• Describe potential navigational hazards and typical traffic patterns of shared waterways.

Learning How to Learn:

• Apply cumulative course skills on the USCG pilotage exam as required for GLMA graduation.
