Course Description
Provides basic life support training, certification, and re-certification for students in the healthcare field who will need these skills in clinical practice. Students will take an online class through the American Heart Association (AHA), complete the post test, and print the certificate. Once the post test is successfully completed, students will sign up for a lab time to complete a practical exam to demonstrate the skills they learned. The certificate will be required to take the practical exam. Group 2 course.

Required Prerequisites
Admission to the ADN or PN programs or the Dental Assisting program, or by instructor permission.
Course Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:
- Recognize symptoms requiring basic life support intervention.
Application:
- Initiate the Chain of Survival.
- Perform prompt, high-quality CPR with C-A-B sequence (Adult/child/infant).
- Initiate early use of an AED (adult/child/infant).
- Provide appropriate breaths.
- Practice the minor basic life support (BLS) differences for children and infants.
- Practice team CPR (adult/infant).
Integration:
- Differentiate between first responder versus professional rescuer techniques.
Human Dimension:
- Perform accurate 2-person CPR with a partner.
Caring - Civic Learning:
- Recognize how CPR is implemented in the community and health care system.
Learning How to Learn:
- Develop the ability to become a skilled provider of CPR.
