Course Description

The student will learn the basic construction of medical words through the use of medical prefixes, suffixes, combining vowels and root words. This foundation will facilitate the understanding of new medical vocabulary encountered in other course work or work situations. Group 2 course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

• Define selected prefixes, roots and suffixes.
• Spell correctly selected medical terms.

Application:

• Locate unfamiliar medical terms using the charts, diagrams, or text of a medical dictionary.
• Construct medical terms from a "layman's" description of a procedure or condition.
• Select the proper grammatical form of a medical term.

Integration:

• Correctly pronounce the medical terms and explain their context in current medical literature.
• Differentiate between terms with similar spelling or pronunciations.
• Translate medical abbreviations within their context.
• Analyze unfamiliar terms using known prefixes, root words, suffixes and context of words.

Human Dimension:

• Reflect on the rationale for taking the medical terminology class and state goals for use of the new knowledge gained by taking the class.

Caring - Civic Learning:

• Use knowledge to explain to others terminology that may be confusing.

• Develop strategies to recall the rules when encountering new medical terms.
