The course is designed to introduce the student to the basic components of the communication process as they operate in four contexts: interpersonal, group, organizational and mass media. The four contexts will be integrated under the rubric of Meaning Theory in the latter part of the course. Designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of the discipline and to give them confidence in speech situations. This course considers voice, platform technique, message organization and audience analysis. Emphasis is upon the formal speaking situation. Group 2 course. The course is designed to introduce the student to various perspectives on the analysis, evaluation and understanding of mediated communication in mass culture. The course is divided into two major parts. The first focuses on industrial-age theories of mass communication and culture. The second part is designed to give the student the necessary tools to make information-age adaptations to the explanatory/predictive models of the effects of mass communication and culture. The direct application of theories, critical thinking and analysis of communication having relevance to the student's individual career choice of life experience is stressed. Group 2 course.
